136 Loved it! John, the Earl of Winchester, was entranced when he first caught a glimpse of Mariah departing from a carriage. When he met her at a ball that evening, they had both a strong connection and a wonderful time together. However, Mariah suffered from some unknown malady that left her weak and tired, which would come and go without warning. Her Stepmother and stepsister, Louisa, used her sickness to control her, keeping her at home rather than allowing her to attend many functions. John was not to be deterred, much to Louisa’s dismay, and was determined to find a cure for Mariah. The author does a wonderful job making her characters relatable. You can feel the hatred rolling off of Louisa and her mother; John’s frustration with Hugh’s bragging about his finances; and Lucy’s disgust regarding Mariah’s family. Love and loyalty flow from John and Lucy, and Mariah’s good heart is always visible. Although is it pretty easy to figure out what is going on, the path there is intricate and clever. This story will keep you interested and entertained, and leave you feeling vindicated and satisfied.
